Hampton Library Budget Vote Is Saturday

Residents of Bridgehampton and Sagaponack school districts can cast ballots on library budget and trustee election.

Residents of the Hampton Library District — which encompasses the Bridgehampton and Sagaponack school districts — will head to the polls Saturday to decide on the 2013 library budget.

There will also be an uncontested trustee election on the ballot, in which only Sagaponack School District residents may vote.

The proposed budget includes a tax levy of $1,499,300, a 1.2 percent increase.

The $17,900 increase in operating expenses is attributed to increased spending on library materials — books, audiobooks, videos, etc. — programs and building and grounds operations. However, most of those spending increases are offset by $30,900 in anticipated savings on payroll and employee benefits.

"If your home was assessed at $1,000,000 for 2011/12, the Library’s share of your property taxes would have been $149.40," states the library newsletter. "Under the proposed budget, this would increase to $151.21, or by $1.81—less than the cost of one cup of coffee — for the entire year."

The budget includes a $560,000 debt payment for the recent renovation of the library.  Hampton Library notes that the debt is anticipated to be paid off by 2016, rather than the original expected date of 2030, thanks to fundraising efforts.

There will be only one candidate on the ballot.

"The open trustee position is a designated Sagaponack seat on the board therefore only residents of Sagaponack are eligible to vote for the trustee," Harris said. "Harvey Loomis is running unopposed for the open trustee seat, which was vacated by Lee Foster, who has finished her final term on the board."

Loomis is a 1953 Yale graduate and a U.S. Navy veteran. He spent 20 years as Time Incorporated, initially working as a reporter for Life Magazine, then as a writer and editor at Time-Life books. After Time, he was a freelancer nonfiction editor for 25 years. he has been a Sagaponack resident and Hampton Library patron since 1982. His wife, Linda Bird Francke, is a local author who has been featured several times in the library's "Fridays at Five" lecture series.

Polls are open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
