Demos Drops Out of Congressional Race

Clears the path to GOP nomination for Altschuler.

The First Congressional District election is now a two-man race — George Demos, R-Ronkonkoma, withdrew his candidacy Friday.

In a statement emailed Friday afternoon, Demos said he is stepping aside to focus on his pending nuptials and new family. Demos writes that he and his fiancee, Chrysa, will be married in a week.

"Both my impending marriage and my race for Congress are deeply important to me," he said. "But our marriage comes first."

Demos' exit leaves incumbent U.S. Rep. Tim Bishop, D-Southampton, and challenger Randy Altschuler, R-Smithtown. This was Demos' second time facing Altschuler in a GOP primary.

Altschuler followed up Demos' statement with one of his own — much more congenial than their past exchanges — and took the opportunity to dig at his now sole opponent, Bishop.

“My wife Cheryl and I wish George and his bride-to-be, Chrysa, much happiness in their future together,” Altschuler said. “While George and I have competed fiercely at times for the Republican nomination, both in 2010 and this year, we share a common goal — and that is defeating Obama rubberstamp, incumbent Congressman Tim Bishop, and bringing an end to his job-killing agenda that has badly hurt the people of Suffolk County.”

Altschuler defeated both Demos and Christopher Cox — President Richard Nixon's grandson — in the 2010 GOP primary. Altschuler went on to be by Bishop in the general election, and hopes to have a reversal of fortunes in 2012, especially since he , which Bishop held the last time around. Altschuler also , ahead of the planned June 26 primary.

Amazing that those who think themselves "real Americans" support someone who destroyed countless American jobs. I'll say one thing for you wingnuts, you sure are dedicated to India's economy

Very suspect! Demos did not know he was getting married next week when he started his demonizing campaign. Or was he just in it to do the bidding of the left???? Read about it here.... http://www.independentsentinel.com/2012/05/forward-with-george-demos-for-congress/
Don't Tread on Me May 26, 2012 at 02:17 PM
It will just come down to...will you vote for the big government nanny state progressive or for a proven job creator who believes in capitalism and what the founding fathers vision of America stands for?
Matthew Lott May 26, 2012 at 02:40 PM
The Truth will eventually come out of this Demos thing. It is very suspect and flimsy. It's "funny" in an ironic way, this local election reflects in the microcosm, the National election "choices". It will be a vote Against someone, and Not "for" someone. What it comes down to is that Demos let a lot of people down...and I hope he doesn't plan on any future career in politics ever...because he just ended it for himself.

Altschuler CREATED jobs around the world AND over one thousand right here I the USA. You are pathetically driven by the lies spewed in political ads. Just exactly how many jobs did Bishop ever create with his own personal investment of his money and ingenuity? Let me see - NONE! He wants to count jobs he claims to have saved with our tax dollars. Doesn't count, Bub. Those jobs are saved by the American taxpayer not Bishop. Liberals love to do things with OUR money. They HATE people who actually do things and create jobs with their own money. They want everyone dependent on the government, so they can control the lemmings. Pathetic.
East End Farmer May 26, 2012 at 02:56 PM
Altschuler created jobs in PAKISTAN...and the jobs he created in the US were responsible for sending American jobs OVERSEAS. He did NOTHING for Americans during the biggest financial crisis this country has seen since the Great Despression.
Postman Sharp May 26, 2012 at 02:59 PM
Were those Paki's Al Qaeda supporters? Did the wages they earn go to Al Qaeda to kill Americans abroad? Some great job Altschuler did for America!
Don't Tread on Me May 26, 2012 at 03:09 PM
@East end farmer and postman. If you are going to spew the same old garbage, get your facts straight. Office Tiger was in India not in Pakistan. Stop trying to create another level. The facts are that Tim Bishop supports and has voted for outsourcing whole industries' for e.g. a car plant in Mexico, GE in China, as well as the end oif any light bulb every being manufactured here in the U.S. You can not ignore Altschuler's creating many, many American jobs and paying taxes to feed the never ending insatiable appetite of an over reaching big government!
LI Snowbird May 26, 2012 at 03:10 PM
Unfortunately those people going back to work are in India, Pakistan, Korea, and China, not in the US.
MensaLady May 26, 2012 at 05:07 PM
Aii I hear are crickets in response to how many jobs Bishop created in In the private sector without our taxpayer money. I'm waiting, but I won't expect any response. And by the way, how many jobs were lost when Southampton LIU had to close because of fiscal mismanagement? How high did the tuition increase for students under that same management. I'll wait for while on those answers, as well. Love the sound of crickets...
Had Enuf! May 26, 2012 at 05:28 PM
Diana...excellent point. And remember that Bishop voted for the bailout of GM and Chrysler, which both filed bankruptcy, took taxpayer dollars, closed hundreds of dealerships, closed factories here in the USA and opened new factories overseas to serve those markets. The emperor has no clothes.
MensaLady May 26, 2012 at 06:26 PM
These bloggers will not be swayed by facts. They will continue to spout the talking points fed them by their leaders. Remember: convince a man against his will, he's of the same opinion still. Do not confuse the lemmings on their march to the sea!
Fred 'n Freeda May 26, 2012 at 06:41 PM
Another right-wing-nut heard from! Both GM and Chrysler were saved and, as a result, tens of thousand of American jobs. They both "borrowed" and "fully repaid" all taxpayer monies. Dealerships closed because of the lack of credit created by the Bush mumbo-jumbo he let his friends run. THAT was at the taxpayer's and stockholder's expense. If it happened again, I would hope that Bishop would have the courage to act in the same manner. Where was Altschuler during these troubled time? Living in his waterfront mansion on the North Shore, counting the money he made selling American jobs abroad. He did absolutely NOTHING to help America out of this crisis...N-O-T-H-I-N-G. And add to that, he made not one single suggestion on how to work through the crisis or help American industries through it either. And you think his business experience brings something to Washington? The only one fooled is you...everyone else sees right through his BS...it hasn't changed since the last time he ran.

Hit the nail on the head - Pelosi's lapdog doesn't really have an original idea. Voting for a major piece of legislation - "let's approve the bill so we can find out what's in it" - great way to conduct business. This faulty representative approved it. A total disgrace. Tim, please move on - FX will take care of you.
Chuck May 27, 2012 at 01:09 AM
Tim Bishop voted to outsource trillions of taxpayer dollars countries overseas. Pretty good bet those bucks went to creating jobs over there. That was our $. Don't know if there's any record of Altschuler sucking up federal "stimulus money" in order to mitigate his risks. Probably wasn't was any dough left after Bishop and his band of merry spendaholics got through with their decidedly unsuccessful foray in venture capitalism. See Solyndra et. al. You should only know what his vote on ObamaCare did to Medicare.
Fish Proudheart May 27, 2012 at 01:29 AM
Altschuler has no proven abilities in government - just talk - which, as we know from GW Bush, comes cheap. Monies sent abroad by the US government come in many forms. If you can show me which of those dollars were specifically sent by Bishop, as you claim, I'd be very surprised. Show me in the Congressional Record. As for National Healthcare, it's about time our legislature found the balls to bring it to our nation. BTW...most os us apparently know more about Medicare than you...thanks to Bishop's constant updating on the bi-partisan work done to restore it. You need an education yourself...better go see your Congressman.
Hay Farmer May 27, 2012 at 01:33 AM
I'll march to vote for Bishop any day...straight to the voting booth again and again and again. He's an honest man who has earned my support with integrity, not with slogans and mud slinging like Demos and Altschuler, who is buying his seat with NJ money...he's not even from Long Island. Just another carpetbagger.
Meadow Lane May 27, 2012 at 01:44 AM
Bishop has my vote again. Altschuler has proven nothing in terms of working within government. It's all speculation and dreaming...mostly on his part. We're still in a dilemma created by the Bush administration and his followers in Washington and businesses world-wide who, simply put, took American taxpayers to the cleaners. We lost jobs, retirement plans, savings and home. This is no time to reward those bastards with yet another seat for the Republican Party. Bishop has my vote on general principles alone...he has them, Altschuler doesn't.
Chuck May 27, 2012 at 02:23 AM
Congressman Bishop voted for the stimulus. Google outsourcing stimulus money and you'll get over 13 million hits. Did he not vote for those expenditures? He voted to take half a trillion dollars from Medicare. The program, by it's own actuaries is in danger of running out of money by 2016. Yanking 500 BILLION BUCKS out of a program we've all been paying into for all our working lives didn't help the bottom line very much. Try downloading the governments own reports on the future of Medicare and SS, instead of taking what a politician tells you as gospel.

It'll be interesting to see how long it takes to pack up an entire office at the House of Representatives building and spiffy it up to hand it over to a new representative.

@Fred 'n Freeda..You say "Another right-wing-nut heard from"..any reason you feel the need to call out names? You do not have your facts correct. I'm just going to throw a few things out there. Bishop took down an entire college. He voted for Obamacare. Has not supplied jobs to Americans. He has fought to KEEP illegal immigrants working out east hense taking AWAY American Jobs. Altschuler..a self made mad with a family. Enrolls a min of 700 employees HERE. (I suggest you learn how business works as a result of govt intervention.)Where he lives? None of your business.Last election? If it were not for the abundance of voter fraud I wonder if he would have won! Either way Bishop skimmed that win!

Don't Tread on Me May 28, 2012 at 03:58 PM
The only people who won in GM and Chrysler were the unions. Let us not forget that they were handed partial ownership over the stockholders. I guess you didn't have stock in the car companies or you would have been singing a different tune. Why don't you research the facts of how Detroit is doing. It is not pretty! As far as Altschuler not having government abilities, there is nothing that works more for me than that issue. I am sick of those in government who do not vote with the people but vote for those whose lines their coffers. It is proven over and over again. The list is endless! One more issue, did you know, the original house bill including retro-fitting your home before you sold it. That means a government inspector would have to come in and give you an okay. Of course, not many here on Long Island would be able to afford to sell their house. When I discussed it with Bishop, his attitude was "what are you worried about" "it will never make it past the Senate". That certainly is not an answer. If you think the prices have come down, leave the progressives to their own devices and you will never see any recovery in our nation.
