Event Preview: Fleming, LaValle to Debate

The Hampton Bays Civic Association debate kicks-off at 7 p.m.

At 7 p.m. New York State Sen. Kenneth P. LaValle and his challenger Bridget Fleming, a Southampton Town councilwoman, will face off in their first public East End debate.

The debate, which is being held at the Southampton Senior Center in Hampton Bays is being sponsored by the Hampton Bays Civic Association and the League of Women Voters.

During the debate, questions will be taken from audience members; Southampton Patch editor Brendan O'Reilly will be sitting on the panel of questioners, asking some reader-submitted questions.

LaValle, of Port Jefferson, has been the senator for the First Senate District for 35 years and works as an attorney. Fleming, of Noyac, is also an attorney, practicing matrimonial law, and she is a former prosecutor for the Manhattan district attorney's office.

LaValle is a Republican with the endorsements of the Conservative and Independence parties. Fleming is a Democratic with the Working Families party endorsement.

Oh look, another Democrat running in a race that she absolutely is certain to lose by a ridiculously wide margin, just so she can earn her stripes and then get appointed to some cushy county job earning $189,000 per year. Calcaterra, Meguin, etc. etc. etc. Same old, same old.

Tom, you need to follow things a little more closely. Bridget Fleming isn't looking for a job; she's a Southampton Town Councilwoman. If she loses -- which she won't -- she continues in that position.

Yeah no, George, sorry, I am paying attention. If you think the salary of a Southampton Coucilwoman is anything akin to what the Bellone administration has been dolling out to the warm bodies who run for unattainable offices, you should see the list of recent appointees, see who ran for what office and was slaughtered, and see what their current salaries are.

I understand, Tom, but I think, unlike Bridget, those people held no other office when they ran for office. Even taking into account the difference in salaries, I don't see the scenario you suggest playing out in Bridget Fleming's case for several reasons, the most compelling one being that she's going to defeat LaValle, but even if she doesn't, it's not likely. We'll see.
