Cuomo Proposes Tax Credits for Renters

Governor says renters deserve a break, too.

Renters throughout New York may see some tax relief if Gov. Andrew Cuomo gets his way.

Although Cuomo's Tax Relief Commission did not propose a credit for renters in its recommendations made last week, the governor said Monday that he supported a tax rebate for renters, with most of the relief going to New York City tenants, according to an Associated Press story

The details on what that relief might entail, however, are still being hammered out.

“I don’t know what the numbers are, and I don’t want to get into the numbers, because they’re all premature,” Cuomo said, according to City & State. “It’s a concept at this point.”

The push to include tax credits for renters may help Cuomo "strike a political balance" to get state lawmakers to green light his tax-cutting plan, the AP reported.
