'Clerical Error' to Be Resolved With Next Tax Bill

Southampton School District residents were never charged for museum funding in latest tax bill.

Due to a "clerical error," when residents of the Southampton School District received their latest tax bill it did not include the voter-approved tax levy to support youth programs at the Parrish Art Museum, according to Southampton Town Tax Receiver Theresa Kiernan.

To rectify the situation, Kiernan plans to add an additional line to the next tax bill to collect the funds, as discussed during a Town Board work session Thursday morning.

The error does not cost taxpayers anything extra — but now they will be paying for two years of museum taxes at once. The extra budget line amounts to about $15 for a home assessed at $1 million dollars, Kiernan said.

The budget line that typically appears on tax bills for Southampton School District property owners is "Southampton Museum Youth."  The new line will be called "Southampton Museum, Prior Year."

In May, district voters approved the district's participation in the Parrish Art Museum with a 496-324 vote — 60.5 percent in favor.
