Trash Packed in Garbage Truck Catches on Fire

Though flames were extinguished by the driver, the Bridgehampton Fire Department soaked garbage with water.

A Mickey's Carting garbage truck making rounds in Water Mill nearly caught on fire when flames erupted amongst the refuse on Tuesday afternoon.

The driver dumped some of the trash onto road when he noticed flames while traveling on Little Noyac Path just after 2:15 p.m.

He was able to extinguish flames before firefighters arrived.

The Bridgehampton Fire Department responded with one engine to pour water on the smoldering pile of garbage, as well as to douse the trash that remained in the back of the truck.

Firefighters were sent back to headquarters at about 3 p.m.

Southampton Town police remained on scene to oversee the clean-up.
