Update: County Road 39 Back Open After Fire

Garage fire closes Southampton's main thoroughfare Wednesday morning.

A fire in a vacant garage closed County Road 39 in both directions between Sandy Hollow Road and North Magee Street Wednesday morning.

The two-bay garage, which was most recently a brakes shop, is across the highway from . Heavy smoke was reported coming from the  garage and the fire was knocked down within 15 minutes of the initial report just before 10:30 a.m.

Traffic was being diverted so that the could set up hoses and other apparatus in the vicinity.

Afterward the fire was extinguished, firefighters continued to use pike sticks to search behind the walls. The ladder truck company members were seen on the building's flat roof. Small amounts of debris and water were sprayed over the roof at one point.  

A rapid intervention team from the were called in case a firefighter were to get caught in a building and needed to be rescued. The was also on scene, but no one appeared to be injured.

An engine from the was called to stand-by at Southampton's headquarters.

Southampton Town fire marshals were also on scene.

The road was re-opened as fire personnel left the scene at around 11:30 a.m.
