Town Police Reviewing Street Crimes Cases

Southampton Town Police Chief William Wilson tells Newsday the investigation could affect inmates.

The is re-examining two years of drug cases initiated by the now-defunct street crimes unit, Newsday.com reports.

Police Chief William Wilson, who had his one-year anniversary on the job this week, told Newsday that the street crimes unit lacked oversight. He did not speak in detail about the internal review, citing an ongoing investigation by the Suffolk County district attorney office's government corruption bureau, according to Newsday. Bureau detectives from on May 9, supoenaed by a grand jury in connection with a criminal action against a "John Doe."

The former supervisor of the street crimes unit, James Kiernan, was , at Wilson's recommendation, pending an administration hearing. The reason for his suspension was not disclosed.
