Town Police Log: Petit Larceny at Department Store

Police said Wainscott woman who worked at TJ Maxx was dipping into the register.

arrested Maria Mendez-Yanez, 30, of Wainscott on Friday on charges of petit larceny.

Mendez-Yanez was stealing money from her job at at the Bridgehampton Commons, police said. According to authorities, Mendez-Yanez was under surveillance by a store investigator since October 2010. Her register, police said, has been coming up short since then. She was caught after she placed money in a TJ Maxx bag under the counter before completing a register transaction and was found to have $600 in her pocket, according to police.

Charges are merely accusations. Defendants are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. A name will only be removed from the police log if the accused has been acquitted and can provide a certificate of disposition. Contact the editor to make such a request.
