Town Police Log: Drunk Driver Arrested After Hitting Cyclist

Police say New Hyde Park man drove away after striking a bicyclist, who was injured.

Driving While Intoxicated

• Jeffrey Lawrence, 35, of New Hyde Park, was arrested June 30 at 5:04 a.m. in Water Mill and charged with DWI and leaving the scene of an accident with a personal injury, both misdemeanors, as well as moving from a lane unsafely and making an improper turn without signaling, both traffic infractions. Police said Lawrence struck a bicyclist and left the scene at 2:02 a.m. at 1054 Montauk Highway in Water Mill. According to the arrest report, Lawrence was pulled over by police because his vehicle matched the damage and evidence at the accident scene. He was found to have slurred speech and breath that smelled of alcohol, and he performed poorly on all field sobriety tests, the report stated. He was additionally cited for refusing a breath screening test, police said.

• Aleksandr Schiavetta, 18, of Manhattan, was arrested June 29 at 12:25 a.m. in Water Mill and charged with DWI, a misdemeanor, and failure to signal, a traffic violation. Police said Schiavetta was stopped for failing to signal 100 feet before turning left at the intersection of Cobb Road West and Cobb Road, police said. Police said he had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and his eyes were glassy.

• James Groff, 28, of Sag Harbor, was arrested June 26 at 9:56 p.m. in Bridgehampton and charged with DWI, a misdemeanor, as well as driving on the shoulder and having insufficient lights, both traffic infractions. Police said Groff was driving west on Montauk Highway near the Pondmeadow Lane intersection with no headlights on and failing to maintain his lane. According to the arrest report, when he was pulled over he was found to have the strong odor of alcohol on his breath, bloodshot glassy eyes, and he was unsteady on his feet. He was also cited for driving an unregistered vehicle, police said.

Petty Larceny

A 40-year-old East Hampton woman was arrested June 27 at 8:25 p.m. in Bridgehampton and charged with petty larceny, a misdemeanor. Police said she was the subject of a Kmart loss prevention investigation and on that day she was confronted. According to the arrest report, she conducted fraudulent merchandise returns and took money from cash registers. She was caught on video and gave a written statement to the loss prevention officers, the report stated.

Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fifth Degree

• A 17-year-old Tuckahoe boy was arrested at police headquarters in Hampton Bays June 25 at 3:35 p.m. and charged with criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree, a misdemeanor. Police said he was arrested for selling a stolen Xbox and games at the Bridgehampton Commons on June 7 at 11:32 a.m.
