Town Police Log: 71-Year-Old Man Throws Ax During Dispute

Also among this week's arrests, a man was charged with DWI after crashing a car he didn't have permission to drive, police say.

Criminal Possession of a Weapon

Srinada Dey, 71, of Bridgehampton was arrested Friday in Bridgehampton on charges of reckless endangerment in the second degree, a misdemeanor, and criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, a felony. Police said that during a dispute Dey threw an ax at another person.

DWI and Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle

Julio Bautista, 20, of Southampton was arrested Wednesday on charges of unauthorized use of a vehicle in the third degree and driving while intoxicated, both misdemeanors. He was also charged with driving without a license, a violation. Police said they pulled Bautista over on Sugarloaf Road in Hampton Bays after they found that he had been involved in an accident. Upon further investigation, they found he was intoxicated and that he took the car that he was driving without the owner’s permission.

Driving While Ability Impaired

Steven Jackson, 22, of Mastic was arrested Monday and charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, a misdemeanor, and speeding and failure to signal, both traffic infractions. Police said they stopped Jackson on Country Road 39 near Inlet Road West for speeding. After stopping him, police said there was a strong smell of pot coming from his car and an investigation revealed that Jackson had been smoking pot and had a small baggie of the drug in his front console.

Frank Verkaik, 23, of Sag Harbor was arrested Tuesday and charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, a misdemeanor, and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation, at Majors Path in North Sea. Police said they pulled Verkaik over after he crossed a double yellow line, entering oncoming traffic. Upon investigation, they found that he had been smoking marijuana and had the drug in his center console with a glass marijuana pipe.

Burglary

, 27, of Riverhead was arrested Sunday and charged him with burglary in the third degree and criminal mischief in the fourth degree. Police say they got word that an alarm had gone off at Cabana Latina Restaurant on Montauk Highway in Shinnecock Hills. Upon arrival they arrested Hernandez, who police say broke a window at the business and entered.
