Town Police Log: 1,850 $100 Bills Replaced with Singles

The following information was supplied by the Southampton Town Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate guilt.

reports from Oct. 24 through Oct. 31 for east of the Shinnecock Canal:

Larceny

• The manager of AIG Wine and Spirits on Noyac Road told town police that sometime between late 2010 and Oct. 19, someone went into the basement of his home, in the same location as the liquor store, and took $185,000 in $100 bills. The packets of $100 bills were replaced with singles, according to police. There was no sign of a break-in or forced entry and police are investigating. Officers noted the incident could be domestic in nature.

• The owner of the Shell Gas Station on County Road 39 near Shrubland Road in Southampton told town police that on Saturday at 1:31 a.m. three men came into his store and purchased a few items while a fourth man pumped $20.14 worth of gas into his gray Mercury. The four men drove away without paying for the gas. Police searched the scene for the car, but could not find it. Officers are investigating.

• The 45-year-old owner of in Water Mill told town police last week that on Aug. 7 at 10:04 p.m. someone stole his iPhone, which was located on a table in his establishment. The owner thought he had lost the $650 phone until recently, when he reviewed his restaurant’s security system and saw someone walk into the restaurant and steal it. Police are investigating.

• A caretaker for a home on Mount Misery Drive in Sag Harbor told town police that sometime between Oct. 7 and Oct. 21, someone stole a flat screen television from the house. The caretaker told police that she did not know who had access to the home during the time period. There were no signs of forced entry, police said.

DWI

• Jairo Lopez-Bonilla, 20, of Bridgehampton was arrested Saturday at 1:27 a.m. at the corner of Sag Harbor Turnpike and Scuttlehole Road in Bridgehampton and charged with DWI, a misdemeanor, and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation. Police said they saw Lopez-Bonilla driving out of lane when they pulled him over.

• Osbeli Salazar, 35, of Southampton was arrested Friday at 2:53 p.m. at the corner of Montauk Highway and Victoria Road in Hampton Bays and charged with DWI and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, both misdemeanors. Police said Salazar was stopped for leaving the scene of a minor accident when they discovered he appeared intoxicated.

Criminal Contempt

• Trevor Basserbie, 39, of Water Mill was arrested Oct. 24 at 11:21 a.m. at Southampton Village Police headquarters on Windmill Lane in Southampton and charged with second-degree criminal contempt, a misdemeanor. Police said Basserbie violated an order of protection by calling someone twice from an unknown phone number on Oct. 21 at 1:07 a.m.

Obstruction of Breathing

• Darryl Hemby, 43, of Bridgehampton was arrested Oct. 24 at 12:26 a.m. and charged with criminal obstruction of breath or breathing, a misdemeanor, and second-degree harassment, a violation. Later that day, Hemby returned and was charged with second-degree criminal contempt, a misdemeanor, for violating an order of protection, according to police documents.

Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance

• Garfield Reid, 38, of East Hampton was arrested last  Oct. 27 at 10:38 p.m. at the corner of Sunrise Avenue and Sag Harbor Turnpike in Bridgehampton and charged with fifth degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony. Reid was a passenger in a car pulled over for a traffic violation when officers saw that he had over 25 grams of marijuana, according to police.

Criminal Mischief

• A 47-year-old woman from Water Mill told Town Police that sometime between 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24 and Thursday, Oct. 27 at 9:30 a.m. someone damaged her 2007 red Mini Cooper, which was parked in her driveway on Water Mill Towd Road. The car’s hood and hatch were keyed, while the convertible top was cut open, according to police. The windshield had also been smashed. Police are investigating.
