Southampton Police Roundup: Burglary, Assault, and Fatal DWI

Anyone arrested is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Southampton Town Police have been kept busy over the last few days, responding to a trio of serious crimes: an armed burglary, an assault, and a DWI crash that took the life of a bicyclist.

Assault and Defying an Order of Protection

On Friday, May 2nd, 2014, at approximately 5:39 PM, the Southampton Town Police arrested Travon Pettaway, 21, of Southampton Village. He was wanted in connection with an assault that took place on March 15, 2014, on Hillcrest Terrace in Southampton. When he was arrested, Pettaway was seen with a woman whom he had been barred from making any contact with under an active order of protection. As a result, Pettaway was slapped with criminal contempt and assault charges. He is being held pending arraignment on May 3, 2014.

Fatal DWI Crash

Also on Friday, Southampton Town Police arrested a drunk driver who struck and killed a bicyclist on County Road #39. Neil S. Fyfe, 29, of Jupiter Florida, was crossing the road on his bicycle, in the crosswalk, when he was hit by an eastbound-traveling Jeep driven by Jesse Werner Steudte, 21, of Southampton.

Onlookers immediately started CPR on Fyfe, who was then taken to Southampton Hospital by Southampton Volunteer Ambulance, where he was pronounced dead. Steudte, the jeep's driver, was treated at the scene for minor injuries and then arrested. Southampton Town Detectives charged him with Driving While Intoxicated, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Southampton Town Detectives are asking anyone who may have information about the crash to contact them at 631-702-2230.
