Incident Reports: K-9 Unit Tracks Burglar in Sag Harbor

Recent crimes and suspicious incidents reported to the Southampton Town Police Department east of the Shinnecock Canal.

Burglary in the Second Degree

Southampton Town police said that sometime on Jan. 25 in Sag Harbor, an unknown person broke the glass on a victim's front door with a hand or fist and entered the residence. The suspect allegedly went through the complainant's cabinets and refrigerator, filling a canvas sack belonging to the victim with food and liquor. The suspect, police said, then left the residence via a back sliding door and walked next door to an unoccupied neighbor's residence, where the sack with the stolen food and liquor was left. Police said the theory is that the suspect may have been spooked by the homeowner's return. The items stolen were a bottle each of Percocet and Vicodin, police said. A New York State K-9 unit was summoned to the scene; a positive trail was found out to Main Street and Stony Hill, where the trail went cold. Blood and the bag of evidence was found at the scene.

Leaving the Scene of A Motor Vehicle Accident

A complainant reported that on Jan. 20 at 1:33 a.m., a driver left the scene of an accident at the intersection of Middle Lane Highway and Sagg Road in Sag Harbor. According to Southampton Town police, the victim said a white Mercedes bearing Florida plates was driving southbound on Sagg Road in the opposite lane of travel. The driver allegedly disregarded the stop sign and struck the complainant's vehicle, which was stopped at the stop sign at Middle Lane Highway, and then left the scene. The victim's vehicle sustained damage to the entire front end, police said; no injuries were reported. So far, police have been unsuccessful in locating the vehicle.

Burglary in the Third Degree

A Southampton resident reported on Jan. 20 at 2:45 p.m. that at an unknown day and time, unknown subjects unlawfully entered his vacant North Sea dwelling and intentionally removed a 32-inch flat screen TV and a Sony CD/radio system with speakers. The complainant said the dwelling is vacant and listed with numerous real estate agents; a hidden key gave agents access to the dwelling. Police have so far reported negative leads.

Aggravated Harassment

Southampton Town police said a Bridgehampton resident reported on Jan. 23, at 3:12 p.m., that a suspect mailed her a threatening letter. According to the complainant, she picked up her mail from her Bridgehampton post office box and observed a handwritten envelope with a threatening message inside. The victim said she believed she knew who the suspect might be based on a prior altercation. Police spoke with the alleged suspect, who had been in Vermont since Saturday; the letter, police said, was mailed on Tuesday. The suspect denied responsibility for the letter and said the complainant makes enemies with neighbors and employees, according to the incident report. The case is pending further information.
