The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office will make a presentation on the heroin and opioid epidemic for parents and interested members of the community on Tuesday, April 22, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Joshua’s Place, 30 Sanford Place in Southampton.
The program will feature a variety of presenters, including Kim Laube, the Executive Director of H.U.G.S., who will talk about where people can obtain help for a substance abuse addiction.
The program will also highlight the personal stories and faces of addiction, including the story of Gabriel Phillippe who died on April 22, 2010 as a result of a drug addiction. Gabriel’s family has held an annual memorial ceremony each year on the anniversary of his passing to spread awareness about addiction, and in the hopes of helping other families and saving lives.

“I am deeply saddened by the loss of Gabriel Phillippe, and so many of our young people, whose lives ended prematurely due to drug addiction. We offer these presentations throughout Suffolk County to make parents aware of the problem and to help them recognize the signs of drug abuse,” stated Sheriff Vincent DeMarco. He added, “We need to start talking more openly about addiction as a medical and mental issue so that more people will be willing to get the help and information they need, and before it is too late.”
