Sag Harbor Police Log: Man Clocks Woman in Face at Café

Police say a verbal argument escalated until suspect punched victim.

Editor’s Note: The following information was supplied by the Sag Harbor Village Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

Assault

• Francisco Lopez, 47, of Sag Harbor, was arrested Nov. 27 and charged with assault in the third degree, a misdemeanor. According to the arrest report, a woman reported that while at Golden Pear Cafe that morning, Lopez walked in and they had an argument about a prior incident. The argument escalated to yelling, and then Lopez punched the victim in her face, knocking her to the ground, the arrest report states. A witness who helped the victim to her feet called police, according to the report, and Lopez was arrested, processed and released on $100 bail with a Dec. 11 appearance date at Sag Harbor Village Justice Court.

Driving While Intoxicated

• Damian Vargas, 31, was arrested Dec. 2 at 3:28 a.m. and charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and multiple vehicle and traffic infractions. According to the arrest report, Vargas is living in Sag Harbor, but he is a non-resident originally from Guatamala. Police said Vargas drove the entire distance of Long Island Avenue in the wrong lane, then made a left on the wrong side of the traffic island on the intersection of Long Island Avenue and Glover Street. Upon being pulled over, police discovered Vargas has a strong smell of alcohol on his breath, his speech was slurred and he was unsteady on his feet, according to the arrest report.

Unfortunate vitriolic comments from the far right, just driving us all apart. Not serving our nation well.

They should all be sent to china and try to pull some of this garbage over there... They wouldn't put up with this for a second... Check out, "the kid from Brooklyn" on YouTube. Look for his video called "terrorism"

It maybe illegal on the books, however is it morally illegal if someone is trying to be productive and feed and provide for them selves or their family. We Legal citizens share at least half the blame in this situation. Did you know that the biggest lobbyists against immigration reform are major corporations such as Mc Donald's, Wall Mart and other franchise restaurants and businesses? "Illegal" immigration to them is a means of keeping the national minimum wage lower and their profit margins larger then if we had a truly functional immigration policy in place. Washington wants to cut programs and raise taxes while we have a fix to our deficit standing at the train station. Tax them. Make the laws so strict that no one would think of paying anyone off the books and allow everyone to work. Create a tax bracket for non-residents that is higher then a resident's who is higher then a citizen's. Grant accesses to programs such as food stamps and health care the same with Citizens getting all that are available and residents getting only a share while non-resident nothing. But just because someone is Illegal, that doesn't make them a criminal. The only thing criminal is the current system in place and the victims are all the workers on both sides.

I think you missed the main point that Damien Vargus was driving while intoxicated with a repeated history of offenses. That is a problem that isn't being addressed adequately. I was hit by a drunk driver in 2006 who broke my neck. He was three times over the drunk driving limits, and he died during the accident.

I'[m on the far left and I don't like criminal illegal aliens either.Kick them all out
North Fork Bob December 05, 2012 at 04:24 PM
Crossing the border without the proper papers is illegal making that person a criminal

Hi Boo

Gee, ever notice how many of these arrest records are from "non-residents"?? Don't blame us for the problems, Viral. Place the blame on those who are making the problems for us in our own country
ViralGrain December 05, 2012 at 06:52 PM
North Fork Bob- So does that make Christopher Columbus a criminal? (joke) There is no way to effectively seal the boarders. You can put up all the preventive measures available and it still won't prevent someone from entering if they really wanted to. The key to anything's survival is adaptation. You want to stop illegal immigration? Here is the solution and by the looks of things in Washington I think it is on track. Bankrupt the the economy. Make the American dollar worthless on the world market. Create an environment with high unemployment and don't manufacture anything. Tax everything at least twice I make people work at least two jobs just to provide for their basic needs and I bet they stop coming. Be carful for what you wish for. On the other hand if the system would capitalize off immigration the realistic and logical way, our economic situation in United States would be stronger then ever. Our infrastructure of roads and bridges, aqueducts and railways would be better and well maintained as the work force would be available. Tax revenue would be at all-time high without putting the burden on any specific class of person. And everybody would live happily ever.

Agree with ViralGrain 110%. Call it what it is "ILLEGAL" They become criminals the minute they cross our borders and can get away with it thanks to our Government. They actually hae more "rights" in this country then we, actual citizens, do. Go figure.
Lou Pay December 06, 2012 at 12:36 AM
I don't know how to break it to you people but this country does not consider it illegal to cross our borders without documentation. That law is now right up there with other old fashioned laws like ''you can't kiss a chicken on a Tuesday'' or ''no hanging your belt on a door knob'' that you might read about in funny article. Amnesty is fully implemented and our government is providing guns to thugs in other countries who are using them to kill our own citizens and law enforcement officials. Knowing that, the same people were asked to keep up the good work. There isn't anything at all illegal anymore about any of this. A fine of $25 can be levied for flirting in New York, it is illegal for a woman to be on the street wearing “body hugging clothing” , a person may not walk around on Sundays with an ice cream cone in his/her pocket and oh yea, you cannot come into our country and commit crimes without becoming a citizen through the proper procedures.

I can't agree more .This town is changing and not for the better i have been out here for 23 years ,and i'm really disgusted in what i see .I will donate any money ,toys ,or food in East Hampton .I have seen people that i know for a fact don't have children and are doing very well and making a lot of money out here in East Hampton .They are walking out of food banks and distribution centers for toys around the holidays ,when i ask what are you doing with garbage bags full of toys from these centers they tell me there sending them back to there country !!! Is anyone checking if the right people are getting the donations .When i called around and found out who was in charge of handing out the donated toys i was asked not to say anything ?Well i am and a lot more people better wake up and open there mouths or you can say goodbye to this beautiful town we once had . Immigrants made America--just keep that in mind. Native Americans are the only ones that have the right to complain about immigrants! Not you, whose family came on a boat from Italy, Poland, and England and so on…Just shut it. It makes you look stupid!
Hazel Wilkonson the First December 06, 2012 at 06:42 PM
Hey, boo, you clearly frighten easily. That's OK, most low-information people are afraid of the world so you're excused.
Boo December 07, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Didn't the illegal immigrant in this article commit a crime? Am I missing something here???
Boo December 07, 2012 at 10:55 AM
We need to change the pilgrim hat on the town seal to a sombrero
Stinker December 07, 2012 at 08:57 PM
there is no such thing as morally illegal. and yes, because someone is illegal, by definition they are a criminal. did you take any courses in logic or deductive reasoning?
Jaguar-Guy December 08, 2012 at 09:38 AM
"Just because they broke a law doesn't make them illegal" - WTF ???? So STUPID.
John Gruber December 12, 2012 at 07:35 PM
"they actually have more rights than we do" how the hell do you figure that?
John Gruber December 12, 2012 at 07:37 PM
Very true about the native americans but the difference with our families is though, they came here LEGALLY through the system and were DOCUMENTED. Ellis Island is proof of that
ViralGrain December 13, 2012 at 05:48 AM
Legally then was getting on a boat coming here and a official at the dock here saying welcome whats your name? Here are your pappers. Good luck. Let them come, tax them in a higher bracket while giving them a path to become citizens and slam those who pay under the table. Finical cliff issue solved.
