Sag Harbor Police: Bite Leads To Arrest

Also: One person arrested on drunken driving charges.

The following information was supplied by the Sag Harbor Village Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate guilt.

• Benjamin R. Ruhland, 38, of Brooklyn, was arrested after he allegedly bit the victim's hand and smashed their cellphone in Sag Harbor on July 14.

Police said Ruhland was the passenger in a BMW traveling south on Main Street when he got into a fight with someone else in the car. He allegedly tried to grab the steering wheel and attempted to pull the car over so he could throw the other man out.

The driver pulled to the side of the road and all of the people in the car got out. Ruhland then tried to start the car, but was unsuccessful. He tried to take the victim's cellphone from him, but when the victim wouldn't let it go, he started to bite the victim's hand, police said. Ruhland got the phone and smashed it to the ground, causing it to break. He also walked across the street and threw the keys into Otter Pond.

Ruhlan was charged with third-degree criminal mischief, a felony, petty larceny, a misdemeanor, and second-degree harassment, a violation.

• Julian E. Romero, 28, of Miami, Fla., was arrested on a drunken driving charge after speeding on Main Street on July 14, police said. Police said he also failed to maintain his lane. He was stopped at the intersection of Brick Kiln and Noyac roads. Police said he appeared drunk, and they also found that his license had been suspended for failure to pay a traffic fine in June and in March for failure to answer a summons. He was charged with driving while intoxicated and aggravated unlicensed operation in the third-degree, both misdemeanors.
