UPDATED: Search Called Off for Jet Ski Pilot Missing in Mecox Bay

Rescuers pulled from the darkness and choppy waters as storms prepare to roll through the South Fork.

Approaching storms cut short the search for a 29-year-old jet ski pilot who went missing in Mecox Bay in Water Mill Sunday night, after a coordinated search for the unidentified man failed.

rescuers were called to the bay at 6:47 p.m. to respond to a jet ski accident that left two people, one man and one woman, in the water. The woman, whose name has not been released, was rescued by a passing boater, according to Southampton Town police. The missing man's name was not released.

In a statement released at midnight, police said the jet ski had overturned.

Once on the scene, Southampton, Sag Harbor and Bridgehampton Fire Departments all put boats in the water to search for the missing man while a Suffolk County Police helicopter was called to search by air, according to emergency workers.

Captain Chris Brenner, spokesman for the , said department Chief Rodney Pierson soon called for extra help from the Quogue, East Hampton, Hampton Bays, Sag Harbor, Westhampton, and Eastport fire departments. The Southampton Bay Constable and several ambulance services were also dispatched. By 8 p.m., divers had also joined the search.

Brenner said the darkness and stormy weather prompted the search to be called off after emergency service workers reported choppy waters and high wind in the bay.

Thunderstorms were expected to hit the Southampton area around 10 p.m.

The investigation has been turned over to Southampton Town police. They said on Sunday night that "the search will resume at first light."
