Project Lifesaver Event Highlights Emergency Locator Technology

On Tuesday, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office in Farmingvale and Brookhaven Town Supervisor Edward Romaine presented a Project Lifesaver informational seminar to parents and caregivers of those living in our community who suffer from cognitive impairment and dementia.

Representatives from Eastern Suffolk BOCES, and teachers and medical professionals also attended the event, which was held at the Brookhaven Town Hall Auditorium in Farmingville.

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Project Lifesaver program is a countywide emergency response locator service capable of finding individuals diagnosed with cognitive impairments which may cause them to wander and become lost.  The program, which Sheriff Vincent DeMarco implemented in Suffolk County in 2007, combines radio technology and specially trained search and rescue personnel from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office.

Project Lifesaver clients wear battery operated transmitter bracelets which emit a tracking signal every second, 24 hours a day, helping their families and friends to know where they are and that they are safe.

Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Project Lifesaver personnel are specially trained, not only in search and rescue with the use of the electronic tracking equipment, but also in the methods necessary to communicate with a person who has a cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Autism, Down Syndrome, or other mental challenges.

To be eligible for Project Lifesaver, clients must be a resident of Suffolk County and have a history of wandering related to cognitive impairments.
