Police: Musician Attacked with Crowbar After Gig

Mick Hargreaves assaulted outside Bayport tavern, police say.

A Southampton musician suffered serious head injuries early Sunday when a homeless man attacked him with a crowbar at a bar he just performed at in Bayport, according to Suffolk County police.

Police said Jalaluddin Khojandi, 25, assaulted Mick Hargreaves, 39, as he was leaving at 3:45 a.m.

Hargreaves was rushed in an ambulance to in East Patchogue, police said.

Khojandi fled the scene in a 2006 Ford Crown Victoria and a description of the vehicle was broadcast on police frequencies, according to a police statement. Then around 4 p.m., officers on patrol noticed the car parked in front of Khojandi's place of employment, My Auto Inc., on East Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, police said.

"As they were impounding the Ford, the officers saw Khojandi drive by in another vehicle," the police statement reads. He was then pulled over without incident and arrested at 4:30 p.m., police said.

Khojandi was charged with first-degree assault, a felony. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday at First District Court in Central Islip.

Hargreaves remained hospitalized as of 8 p.m. Sunday, according to Brookhaven Memorial.

According to promotional materials for the gig, titled "A Mid-Summer Night's Hoot," Hargreaves played with his band The King Guys following a set by opening act, Jeff McLary of Sayville.
