A Southampton man was carrying a loaded gun and had threatened to kill people in Southampton and Massachusetts when he was arrested on a ferry Thursday afternoon, police said.

Shawn L. Douglas, 43, was arrested on the Cross Sound Ferry after it docked in New London, Conn. at 4:07 p.m, New London police said.

Police said Douglas threatened to kill someone in Southampton and then told relatives that he was going to Massachusetts to kill a family member there. Douglas then fled and later boarded the ferry in Orient Point, police said.

Douglas is charged with carrying a pistol without a permit, breach of peace and possession of marijuana. He is likely to face additional charges in New York, police said.

Douglas is a part-time security guard for the Southampton School District, according to a statement from Superintendent Scott Farina on the district's website.

Here is that statement in full:

Yesterday, Shawn Douglas, a part time security guard for the district, was arrested in a non-school related incident. He was immediately reassigned to home pending the outcome of a legal investigation and is not permitted onto school grounds. Mr. Douglas has served in a part time capacity for approximately four years and prior to his hiring passed all fingerprinting and background checks and holds a security certification. The district will continue to be fully staffed with security department personnel as the safety of our students and staff remains our top priority.

As this is an ongoing investigation all additional inquiries should be made to local law enforcement officials.
