Police: Drunk Driver in Water Mill Had 5-Year-Old in Car
Woman charged with felony DWI under Leandra's Law.
A Water Mill woman has been charged with felony DWI for driving drunk with a 5-year-old child in the car, according to Southampton Town Police.
Police said 48-year-old Caroline A. Evans was arrested shortly after midnight Thursday morning on Upper Seven Ponds Road and Old Mill Road in Water Mill. She had been driving a 2006 Honda four-door sedan northbound on Old Mill Road and failing to stay in her lane when she was pulled over and found to have a child passenger, according to a police press release.
Evans was charged with aggravated DWI under Leandra's Law, a state law which elevates a misdemeanor DWI charge to a felony if the driver has a child 15 or younger in the car. She was additionally charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, and failure to maintain lane, an infraction. She was transported to headquarters in Hampton Bays for processing and held for arraignment.
