Police Charge Man With DWI After Traffic Stop

Southampton Town Police said man was speeding down Montauk Highway in Sagaponack.

The Town of Southampton Police reported the following arrest for the week of Dec. 6. A criminal charge is an accusation. Defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

  • Thomas Zukas, 57, of East Hampton, was arrested on a drunken driving charge in Sagaponack on Jan. 4. According to Southampton Town police, Zukas was driving a 2009 Honda Civic east on Montauk Highway at around 11:45 p.m. when he was stopped for speeding. When questioned, police said they detected an odor of alcohol on his breath and that he had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and was unsteady on his feet. He failed a field sobriety test, and refused to submit to a breathalyzer. Zukas was arrested and charged with DWI, a misdemeanor, refusing a breath screening test, speeding and driving at unreasonable speed, all violations.
