Playground Equipment Stolen, Garbage Illegally Dumped at Camp

Also reported to Southampton Town police recently, Route 27 sign mowed down and driver flees; broke shop safe stolen; purse snatched; and more.

Crimes and suspicious incidents recently reported to the Southampton Town Police Department east of the Shinnecock Canal:

Illegal Dumping, Grand Larceny

• An employee of Camp Gan Israel in Southampton told police July 24 that each Sunday someone has been dumping large amounts of garbage and furniture in and around the camp’s dumpster. Additionally, a $1,000 slip-and-slide, a $200 folding table and two benches valued at $100 went missing from the playground area.

Leaving the Scene of an Accident

• A Sagaponack man told police on July 23 that he noticed a Route 27 sign had been uprooted. The sign was apparently hit by a vehicle that was headed west on Route 27 before it crossed over the eastbound lane and onto the grass shoulder.

Burglary

• The owner of Hampton Brake Repair Shop on County Road 39 in Southampton told police July 23 that sometime overnight someone took a small table safe containing New York State inspection stickers, $900 cash and a New York State vehicle title.

• A Manhattan man told police July 26 that sometime since July 21 someone broke into his Water Mill house and removed copper pipes from the basement and water heater.  A basement window and outdoor motion sensor were both broken.

Grand Larceny

• An East Hampton woman told police July 22 that on July 19 when she was shopping at the Bridgehampton Commons her pocketbook was stolen. The women said she shopped at TJ Maxx the headed to Kmart, where she realized her purse was gone. Her phone was located inside a clothing donation bin, but she could not get in it to retrieve her phone, according to the incident report. The maroon L.L. Bean pocketbook contained an iPhone 3G in a black and blue case, a Suffolk County National Bank debit card, an American Express credit card, a Capital One card and $22 cash.

Identity Theft

• A Southampton woman told police July 21 that she realized her Discover card was missing and someone else had been using it within the town when her credit card bill arrived and there was $235 of charges she did not make.

• A Hampton Bays man told police July 23 that he discovered charged on his and his wife’s Disney credit card for card insurance in Riverhead and car equipment. The insurance payment was $401 and the equipment was $118. He said the insurance company presented a signed receipt faxed from Southampton Masonry. The man said it was not his signature, but he had used the card at Southampton Masonry several times.
