One Arrested After Large Fight in 230 Elm Parking Lot

Mastic Beach man charged with assault.

Updated March 27 6:32 p.m. - A large fight broke out Saturday shortly after 12:30 a.m. in the parking lot of an Elm Street venue, leaving one man with an eye injury that will require surgery, according to Southampton Village police.

Police did not specify how many people were involved in the melee outside 230 Elm, though one alleged participant has been arrested. Police said that after an investigation, 25-year-old Paul J. Ward III, of Mastic Beach, was placed under arrest Sunday at 2:15 p.m. and charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor.

Det. Sgt. Herman Lamison said the fight was breaking itself up when police officers arrived. The arrestee, who formerly lived in Southampton, and the hospitalized man, who is also a local, knew each other, he said.

Only one person — the man with the eye injury — was reportedly taken to Southampton Hospital following the fight.

Lamison said that, unless other victims come forward, he does not expect further arrests tied to this incident.
