National Manhunt Underway for Suspect in Hit-and-Run Death of Nun

Southampton Town police chief says Sister Jacqueline Walsh's killer has fled the state. Carlos Armando Ixpec-Chitay named as suspect.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — Eleven days after while on an evening walk on a quiet Water Mill street, have released the name and photograph of the man suspected to have been behind the wheel.

Carlos Armando Ixpec-Chitay, 30, was named as the suspect, described as a 30-year-old Hispanic male, with dark brown/black hair, brown eyes, 5 feet and 7 inches tall, and approximately 140 pounds. Police said he is known to frequent areas of Water Mill and Riverhead, and has a Guatemalan passport.

Police Chief William Wilson said he hopes the manhunt gets national media attention, because investigators now know the suspect has fled New York State.

"It is clear to us at this point that the suspect is no longer in the area," Wilson said.

Detectives did not release the name and photograph of the suspect earlier because active leads and good information was streaming in, the chief said. In fact, he added, "We were very close to him a few times." However, the suspect has stayed on the move and each time was gone before police arrived.

Southampton police are working with the U.S. Marshals, Suffolk County district attorney's office and other agencies, and now are turning to the public for help in apprehending Ixpec-Chitay.

"We are not going to stop looking for this guy until he is taken into custody," Wilson said.

Wilson said he is aware that there are conspiracy theories that the police are protecting the real driver. He called the theories "patently ridiculous."

On the night of the hit-and-run, just a half mile from the scene, detectives located an unoccupied 2009 Volkswagen Touareg with front-end damage. Wilson said the suspect was an employee of the registered owner of the SUV, Andrew Zaro, who lives on the street where Sister Jackie was killed.

Sister Jackie, 59, who was a pastoral associate at in Syosset, was on retreat in Water Mill with fellow Sisters of Mercy, staying at a retreat house on Rose Hill Road. It was reportedly typical of her to go on walks alone.

A passerby discovered her body at 8:30 that night and called police.

Cops are hot on your tail. Better to turn yourself in than face a beating from a bevy of angry nuns....I know; I went to Catholic School!

You can run but you can't hide you P.O.S. And, I hope you cannot sleep or eat knowing you killed a human being and left them to die in the street. I hope they get life - no excuses.

Just another reason in a long list of reasons to secure our borders. There is a very active underground network and immigration needs to be able to do their job!!

I.C.E. has been rendered utterly useless under this President's administration. In fact, when this criminal murderer is captured, I won't be surprised when he gets legal aid and probably gets a personal appearance from A.G. Eric Holder - with a pat on the back. Not holding my breath Pat.

LOL...rulers will be at the ready....not to mention guilt for life. Killing one of God's girls....big trouble...BIG! All kidding aside, no one should be hit and left to die alone on the side of the road. Accidents do happen, but leaving the scene of a hit and run is no accident, it is a decision that is made and acted upon. If he is afraid to stand before a Judge and account for his actions, can you imagine how it will be for him to stand before God and account for leaving a nun on the side of the road to die? There will be no place for him to run to then.

I don't think he's in this Coountry. He's back home where he can hide out perhaps forever. Very sorry

Wonder why the delay in releasing his picture, as he's probably now long gone from the area. This is yet another example of the problems illegal aliens bring. Mr.Zaro should face charges for hiring and harboring illegal aliens, but because he, like most who employ these men, are rich and powerful, they can do whatever they want. The rule of law no longer exists in this country, since laws are only enforced against the poor and middle class, and the rich can do whatever they want, with the blessing of the local and federal governments. We need to rise up against this soon or our country will be lost for good.

Newesday Reports "In September 2006, Chitay, then living in Riverhead, was stopped by Suffolk County police on the County Road 83 in Holtsville, driving without headlights and swerving. He pleaded guilty in 2007 to operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol, had his driver's license suspended for one year, and was sentenced to one year of probation and fined $500, records show." Tell me why this piece of garbage wasn't deported then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What job did this illegal alien have with Mr. Zaro in Water Mill ??? Employers of illegal aliens should be punished and penalized. This vehicle should have been seized, unless Zaro claims it was stolen - which he doesn't. What does this Andrew Zaro do - other than employ illegals ?? Where are Mo Neill's comments ??!!
Gramps Pupany July 21, 2012 at 12:53 PM
Where does it say that he is not here legally? You've gotten yourselves all worked up and you sound like that jury in Sydney Lumet's film "12 Angry Men". You owe it to yourselves to see this film at once. There's a lesson in it that you would be wise to learn. Yes, we all want to bring this man stand trial in a court of law, but you're starting to sound like lawless people yourselves. The police have a good reason for how they conduct an investigation. Billy Wilson is a very capable commander of his men and they respect him. You can be sure that the chief had all available law enforcement agencies working with him long before now. Besides, when this Carlos guy dies and stands before God at the Pearly Gates, only to find out that God is a woman (which we all suspect), it'll be the longest day of his life! We all meet our maker sooner or later. Carlos may run, but he can't hide.

They need to also find who helped this scumbag escape and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law; he had help, we all know it.
Tim July 22, 2012 at 07:52 PM
There is another story where Zaro is quoted he fled because he was Illegal. Carlos called Zaro and told him what happened...Zaro told him to turn himself in but he fled. Zaro did not call authorities to report the crime.
Jaguar-Guy July 23, 2012 at 10:32 AM
Hey - Where are all of Hazel's comments ???!!!
