Update: Multiple Departments Fight Pool House Fire in Water Mill

Smoke inhalation sends firefighter to hospital.

Multiple fire departments responded late Wednesday night to a pool-house fire in Water Mill; one firefighter had to be treated for smoke inhalation, according to a spokesman.

The fire was reported at 186 Crescent Ave around 11:30 p.m. Capt. Chris Brenner said the the pool house was unoccupied and the fire, in the kitchenette area, was reported by the caretaker of the estate. He said that when Chief Rodney Pierson arrived there was heavy smoke and fire.

It took 10 minutes to knock down the fire, Brenner said. "The guys and girls of our department did a textbook stop.” Firefighters stayed on scene for an hour and a half wetting the area and making sure the fire hadn't spread anywhere else, he added. The firefighter with smoke inhalation was transported by to  and treated and released, Brenner said.

Southampton Fire Department was the lead agency but Hampton Bays, and fire department tankers were called in. "The water source was far away from the fire, so we had to lay 5-inch hose to the fire hydrant way over 1,000 feet,” department spokesman Capt. Chris Brenner said Thursday.

A rapid intervention team was also called in. Rapid intervention teams standby in case a firefighter is lost, trapped or injured in a burning building and needs saving.

"The fire marshals were there and they are investigating the cause of the fire,” Brenner said.
