Motorcyclist Remains Hospitalized After Unexplained Crash

A Center Moriches teenager who drove off Montauk Highway in Shinnecock Hills and into a utility pole is hospitalized at Stony Brook University Hospital and police are asking for information on what preceded the crash.

A 911 caller told Southampton Town police at 9:54 p.m. Tuesday that a motorcycle was found down near the Eastway Drive intersection, and the driver could not be found. By the time officers arrived, passing motorists found the motorcycle driver, police said. Officers initiated medical attention and then Southampton Volunteer Ambulance personnel took over and transported the victim to Southampton Hospital, where he was stabilized before being moved to Stony Brook University Hospital.

The victim was identified as 19-year-old Juan Sebastian Cardenas Plata.

Police said it appears he was headed west on Montauk Highway on the 2003 Kawasaki motorcycle when he drove into a guardrail on the south side of the highway then struck a pole.

In a statement, police said they do not know what caused him to drive off the road. Anyone with information regarding the accident is asked to called detectives at 631-702-2230.
