Minivan Takes Out Pole, Causes Outages

The driver is being treated for non life-threatening injuries.

Power remained interrupted to the Stony Brook Southampton's campus at around 6 p.m. on Thursday night after an accident on Tuckahoe Road late that afternoon.

The Southampton Fire Department was called after a minivan hit a pole at 4:05 p.m. Chiefs arrived to find a pole split in half and wires down all around the car. The driver was able to get out of his car on his own, according to Second Assistant Chief Chris Brenner.

Southampton Volunteer Ambulance transported the man to Southampton Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

"Power will be out for an extended amount of time in the area so LIPA can raise the pole," Brenner said.

Fire police shut the road down for approximately 1 1/2 hours.

The scene was turned over to the Stony Brook University police for investigation, Brenner said.

Chief Dennis Roy was in charge of the scene.
