Incident Reports: Three Report Threatening Phone Scam

Crimes reported to Southampton police through July 8.

Crimes and suspicious incidents recently reported to the Southampton Town Police Department:

Scheme to Defraud

• A North Sea resident told police on July 5 that someone tried to scam him out of $3,000 over the phone.  According to the resident, an unknown person called him and said he was going to shoot his brother.

A similar message was received by another Sag Harbor resident a day before. She told police that the caller said he had her father at gunpoint. She told cops that she quickly called her father to find that he was at work.

Also on July 4, a Southampton resident reported that he got a call from a man with a Spanish accident, demanding $1,000 for the return of his son, who the caller said was being held at gunpoint.

Grand Larceny

• A Southampton resident told police on July 4 that someone stole $2,000 from a envelope that was hidden in a dresser drawer.

• A motorcycle was reported stolen from a driveway in Southampton on July 7. According to a police report, the motorcycle had no keys and was not charged. Police are investigating. 

Burglary

• Sometime between July 4 and 5, over $1,000 in goods were stolen from a cottage in Southampton, according to police. The report states that the items taken included a computer and Gucci wrist watch. 

• A Southampton resident told police on July 6 that sometime between July 4 and July 6 someone entered his home and stole a $700 air compressor and several other items. 

Petit Larceny

• A Bridgehampton resident told police that on July 5 someone stole her purse that she accidently left at the Golden Pear in Southampton. In the purse was $500, a BlackBerry, an iPhone and sunglasses.

• A Bridgehampton resident told police on July 4 that someone took her purse out of her trunk while she was loading groceries at King Kullen in Bridgehampton. In the purse was her driver’s license, Verizon cellphone and $40 in cash.

• A Southampton resident called police on July 7 to report that someone stole her iphone, valued at $500 from her car, which was parked in a driveway.  

Criminal Mischief

• Police were notified on July 7 that someone knocked over a porta potty at Sagg Main Beach in Sagaponack, damaging the soap dispenser.
