Incident Reports: Scammers Report Fake Accident, Kidnapping

Also among crimes reported to Southampton Town police, North Sea woman reports checks were stolen and cashed.

Crimes and suspicious incidents recently reported to the Southampton Town Police Department east of the Shinnecock Canal:

Attempted Larceny

• An East Hampton woman reported on June 24 that while in Bridgehampton she received a call from a blocked number during which the caller said he had kidnapped her brother would kill him unless she sends $1,300 via Western Union to a Julian Rodriguez in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Police called the brother, who then arrived to show he was not in fact kidnapped, according to the incident report.

• A Southampton woman told police June 26 that she received a call stating that her brother was injured and needed help, The caller asked for $2,500 before any more information would be provided and said the brother would most likely die if the money was not sent. "The complainant contacted her brother and he was fine and no money was given," the incident reported stated. The caller asked that the money be brought to Whitmore's, which police believe referred to a business in East Hampton.

Larceny

• A North Sea woman told police June 24 that a relative took two checks from her checkbook, wrote them out to cash and forged her signature to cash them. One check was one $500 and the other was for $700.

Criminal Mischief

• An employee of Physique 57 in Bridgehampton told police June 24 that between May 28 and June 17 damage was done to the business on multiple occasions. On May 28, it appeared that someone tried to force open the door and unlock it from the outside. On June 17, an exterior camera wire was cut and outdoor furniture was moved.

Assault

• A Water Mill man told police June 28 that while drinking at a Henry Road residence he was involved in an altercation with a man who punched him. The Water Mill man did not appear injured and refused medical attention, police said. He was advised to come to police headquarters if he wished to pursue charges, the incident report states.
