Incident Reports: Resident Scammed After Told Her Sister Was in a Crash

Crimes and suspicious incidents recently reported to the Southampton Town Police Department in Riverside and Flanders.

Petty Larceny

• A Noyac resident was scammed out of $350 on June 6 after she answered her cellphone and agreed to wire the money to a man who told her that he was going to hold her sister hostage. The woman told police that the man told her that her sister struck a car that was parked with his nephew sitting on the hood and that the child fell off and was badly injured. He then told her that he would hold his sister hostage unless she wired him money Western Union. Police are investigating.

• On the same day, a similar incident happened to another Noyac resident, only the Noyac Road resident was told by the scammer that his mother was involved in a car accident. He told police before paying the money, he called his mother to find that she had been home all day. Police are investigating.

• A North Sea resident called police on June 16 after he said a car crashed into his shrubs and took off.

• A Bridgehampton resident told police on June 16 that someone backed into his car, which was parked on Butter Lane.

Burglary

• A Sagaponack resident called police on June 14 after he noticed framed artwork missing from the walls in his basement. Also missing was a television set, a table saw, a nail gun, and a skill saw. Police are investigating.
