Incident Reports: Stranger on the Deck; Tip Thief Returns Cash

Recent crimes and suspicious incidents reported to the Southampton Town Police Department.

Assault

• A clerk at Valero gas station near the Riverside traffic circle reported that around 8:10 a.m. on Dec. 20, he was intentionally punched in the face by an unknown male after he was told to leave the store. Police are investigating the incident.

Larceny

• Police are investigating a grand larceny reported at a West Neck Point home in Noyac. According to reports, someone stole over $2,000 in copper gutters between the night of Dec. 19 and the morning of Dec. 20.

• An East Quogue homeowner reported that sometime over the past few weeks, all of the copper piping and wiring had been removed from his (or her) Shinnecock Road home. The home had been damaged in Hurricane Sandy and required sheet rock and flooring, and the homeowner had been checking on the home every couple of weeks. According to reports, a neighbor stated that he had seen a white station wagon in the driveway a few weeks prior to the report.

• An Eastport woman reported on Dec. 18 that around 10:15 a.m., she saw a ‘Help a Vet’ truck place donation information on her mailbox, and a few minutes later, noticed the same truck pull up to her mailbox. According to reports, the woman had taped an envelope on her garbage can containing $50 as a tip for her garbage man. She said she saw a man exit the ‘Help a Vet’ truck, take the envelope and drive off. The woman followed the truck, stopped it, and demanded her money back. The man returned the money, and the woman said she did not wish to pursue charges.

• A Sag Harbor resident reported on Dec. 22 that several UPS packages had been taken from her doorstep. According to reports, the woman stated that around 4:45 p.m. she came home to find that four boxes – containing snap circuits, women’s stretch pants, a cotton top and two boom cubes – had been taken. The incident is being investigate.

• A Hampton Bays man reported that he left his wallet on the counter at McDonald’s on Montauk Highway around 12:15 p.m. on Dec. 22. According to reports, the man’s wallet held $800 cash, a credit card, a bank card and a pistol permit. Police are waiting to obtain security footage and are investigating the report.

Identity Theft

• A Hampton Bays woman reported a case of identity theft after finding over $2,000 in purchases made in her name without her knowledge. According to reports, iPods, iPads, and iPod touch, Xbox game consoles and more were purchased in her name. Police are investigating the incident.

Criminal Mischief

• Between the night of Friday, Dec. 14 and Saturday Dec. 15 morning in Tuckahoe, a N. Magee Street resident reported that someone threw a brick through the windshield of his Toyota Echo, sitting unattended in his driveway. The man reported that the same thing happened in February of 2012.

Trespassing

• A resident of Old Country Road in Quogue reported that on Dec. 22 around 11:45 p.m., after he heard a noise on his deck, he opened the back door to find an unknown person with a black hooded sweatshirt and dark pants running off his deck and across the street into the woods. Nothing was broken.
