The Suffolk County Police Department Fifth Precinct contacted Southampton Town police around 9 p.m. Tuesday with a report of a suicidal man who said he planned to jump in front of a train, according to Sgt. Andrew Ficurilli.
Ficurilli said the man had contacted a friend via cellphone stating his intent, and the cellphone was traced to the Water Mill-Bridgehampton area. Authorities requested that the Long Island Rail Road slow down its trains in the area.
A Suffolk County police helicopter was called in, and a New York State police K-9 unit was requested. According to chatter on emergency frequencies, the man is described as white, 220 pounds, 6 feet tall, with gray hair, a mustache and blue eyes.
