Garbage Truck Goes Up in Flames Monday Morning

The truck was on Sandy Hollow Road when a fire broke out, a fire chief says.

Firefighters started off the week by extinguishing a garbage truck fire in Southampton.

The Southampton Fire Department was called to a vehicle fire on Sandy Hollow Road on Monday at about 8:45 a.m.

When the chiefs arrived, they found an Emil Norsic & Son. garbage truck with the cab fully engulfed in flames, according to Second Assistant Chief Chris Brenner. He said firefighters were on scene and put out the fire within 10 minutes. "The members did a great job," he said.

The truck's cab was destroyed, but the box on the back may be salvageable, Brenner said.

Sandy Hollow Road was closed in both directions from Country Road 39 to North Sea Road for approximately 1 1/2 hours. The Southampton Town Fire Marshal's office was called to determine the cause.

No injuries were reported.

Chief Dennis Roy was in charge of the scene.
