Elementary School Evacuated Monday for Smell of Gas

No gas or carbon monoxide detected in the building, a fire chief says.

The Southampton Elementary School was evacuated briefly on Monday morning for a smell of gas near the boiler room, according to Southampton Fire Department Second Assistant Chief Chris Brenner.

The fire department was called to the school at about 9:30 a.m.

"The building was evacuated for precautionary reasons," Brenner said.

Firefighters checked the building with meters and found no gas or carbon monoxide readings, he said.

Chief Dennis Roy gave the go-ahead for students to re-enter the building 20 minutes later.

National Grid responded to check further, Brenner said.
