East Hampton Man Arrested on DWI Charge in Sagaponack

Police say they saw the driver pour his drink out the window.

The following arrests were reported by the Southampton Town Police Department over the past week. A charge is an accusation. Defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Sagaponack

• Manuel Chaves-Garcia, 37, of East Hampton, was arrested in Sagaponack on Oct. 19 on a drunken driving charge. According to police, Chaves-Garcia was heading west on Montauk Highway at around 11:30 p.m. when he was observed dumping an alcoholic beverage out of his window. When he was stopped police said they noticed a strong odor of alcohol on his breath as well as bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. Police said he was also unsteady on his feet and performed poorly on a field sobriety test. He was arrested and charged with DWI, a misdemeanor, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, having an open container of alcohol, moving lanes unsafely and crossing over no passing lanes, all violations.
