Crimes Nearby: Man Charged with Rape of Child

The following information was supplied by East End police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate a conviction.

Recent arrests and reported crimes from elsewhere on the East End:

EAST HAMPTON

• A 33-year-old Springs man has been in Suffolk County Criminal Court and is being held at the county jail. An investigation began on Jan. 24, when East Hampton Town police said they found Kleber A. Sigcha in a car with someone younger than 15 at a rest-stop in Wainscott. Sigcha denied that anything sexual had occurred, according to his arrest report.

• An East Hampton man was charged with a felony on Wednesday, after a woman found a small surveillance camera attached to her desk in her bedroom. Juan I. Martinez Martinez, 30, of East Hampton, was charged with unlawful surveillance in the second-degree and released on $2,000 bail following an arraignment in East Hampton Justice Court. According to town police, Martinez installed the camera to catch the 38-year-old woman dressing and undressing without her knowledge.

• Danny S. Verdugo-Nieto, 32, of East Hampton, was arrested on a driving while intoxicated charge after an accident in Springs on Jan. 22 at 2:40 a.m. Police said they found a 1996 Ford van had crashed into a tree on the side of Three Mile Harbor Road, near Gann Road, but that the driver had fled the scene. The officer found footprints in the snow leading to a nearby residence, police said. Verdugo-Nieto allegedly took off after he saw the officer and, after a short foot pursuit, he surrendered himself by putting his hands in the air and getting down on his knees.

NORTH FORK

• Joseph Gagen, 45, of Greenport, was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated on Jan. 29 at 11:35 p.m. on First Street in the village. Police said that Gagen was driving south on First Street and struck a parked vehicle. Gagen was found to be intoxicated, transported to police headquarters in Peconic and held pending arraignment. There were no injuries in the collision, police said.

• A 27-year-old employee of Hampton Hearth and Patio on Route 25 in Southold reported to on Jan. 28 that someone stole $300 from a desk drawer of the retail store some time between Jan. 27 at 5 p.m. and Jan. 28 at 11 a.m., police said. Police said that entry was made through the front door which was locked but was jiggled open. Investigation of the incident continues, police said.

• The owner of reported to police on Jan. 26 at 2:14 a.m. that someone had entered an unlocked area of the building located behind on Route 25 in Mattituck around 12:45 a.m. that morning, unsuccessfully tried to break through a wall connecting two different areas of the laundromat, smashed a front plateglass window, and kicked in the door to the office, police said. When police arrived at the scene, the rear door was open but nothing appeared to be missing, police said. The incident resulted in $250 worth of damage and is still being investigated, police said.

• A employee reported to police on Jan. 25 that three lawns in three separate parks — on Bay Avenue, on Peconic Bay Avenue and — had been damaged by someone who drove on the grass and did doughnuts, police said. The employee told police that he believes the damage occurred some time between Jan. 24 at 8 p.m. and Jan. 25 at 7 a.m. and requested extra patrols, police said.

RIVERHEAD

• A Riverside woman was arrested and hit with felony weapons charges shortly after midnight on Thursday. According to Southampton Town police, Valderine Smithen, 40, threatened a Vail Avenue resident with a razor during an argument.
Police said she was found in the vicinity of the incident and arrested for criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, a felony, and menacing in the second degree, a misdemeanor.

• A Southold man was arrested early Friday morning on DWI charges after state police said he hit a curb while speeding around the Riverside traffic circle.
According to police, Paul Reinckens, 24, was pulled over just after 2 a.m. while driving a gray Mercury. Police said he struck a curb and after being asked to pull over, Reinckens stopped in the middle of the road and had to be instructed again to pull to the side of the road. Police said a strong odor of alcohol was detected on his breath, and he failed field sobriety tests. He was charged with DWI and speeding, and is due back at Southampton Town Justice Court on Feb. 12.

WESTHAMPTON-HAMPTON BAYS

• A 20-year old East Hampton resident was arrested for obstructing governmental administration after police say she failed to move away from a scene where the driver of the car she was in was charged with DWI. Police say Wendy Quintero, crossed her arms and said, "Get your hands off of me, I'm not moving."
