Hampton Jitney and a second vehicle involved in serious crash.

A woman who was behind the wheel of a Chevy SUV involved in an accident with a Hampton Jitney in Southampton on County Road 39 has died, police confirmed Thursday afternoon.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of her family, Southampton Town Police Department Det. Sgt. Lisa Costa said.

Costa said there were two people aboard the jitney during the crash.

The accident was reported at 7:05 a.m. near St. Andrews Road, police said. Traffic was being diverted in both directions. Around 12:15 p.m., police were preparing to reopen one of the two eastbound lanes.

The road closure caused traffic to back up for miles on County Road 39 and Sunrise Highway. The heavy delays spread to Montauk Highway, which runs parallel to County Road 39 and Sunrise Highway.
