County Road 39 Accident Cleared

Lanes reopened at around 8 a.m.

The Wednesday morning commute in Southampton was just getting back up to pace around 8:15, following a head-on accident that closed two lanes on County Road 39.

Southampton Town Police Sgt. John Boden said that the collision occurred at 6:27 a.m., between two cars going in opposite directions on the four-lane highway. One westbound lane and one eastbound lane were closed, he said.

Boden said one passenger was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

The accident was cleared and the lanes reopened around 8 a.m., he said.

Further details were unavailable at this time.

Eastbound traffic was tied up all the way to the Hampton Bays exit off Sunrise Highway.

Many commuters opted to get off County Road 39 and instead take Montauk Highway, which itself became backed up headed eastbound.
