Cops: Man Stole Business's Sign for Scathing Review
Sag Harbor man drove around with the sign on his truck, police say.
A Sag Harbor man was arrested April 4 after a woman noticed a sign for her father-in-law's business displayed on the back on the man's truck — with a jab at the business written on the sign.
Police said a builder reported that the sign was taken from in front of a job site in Sagaponack. When his daughter-in-law spotted the sign on the truck, she emailed him a photo, including the vehicle’s license plate, according to the arrest report. An incident report states that the sign had words written on it: “They don’t pay. Don’t build dumb. Don’t use Plum.”
Police said they ran the license plate and it shows that the truck belonged to Sean Scanlon, 57, of Sag Harbor, and when they arrived at his residence, the sign was in Scanlon’s front yard.
Scanlon was arrested April 4 at 1:43 p.m. on Claypit Road in Noyac and charged with criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree, a misdemeanor.
According to the incident report, the sign is valued at $170.
