Cops Investigating Tips, Combing Area Video Footage in Search of Armed Robbers

While police continue to search for the armed robbers who tied up the owner of the Corner Closet in Sag Harbor, detectives are combing through surveillance footage of the surrounding area.

Sag Harbor Village Police Detective Jeff Proctor said on Thursday that Suffolk Count police are helping to sift through the video footage from around Main Street. He said there were no surveillance cameras in the Corner Closet, a vintage consignment shop at 108 Main Street.

There were also no surveillance cameras at the other store that police believe the robbers went into first. 

Proctor said about 20 minutes before the robbers entered the Corner Closet, they went into Illusions, a jewelry store at 78 Main Street, just a few doors down. While he can't be sure if they planned to rob the store, he knows they asked the same question to an employee there as they had to the woman at the Corner Closet. 

"They might have realized there were multiple employees at the Corner Closet or they might have seen surveillance cameras — they weren't hooked up, unfortunately," Proctor said. 

He would not release information about the kind of question the robbers asked as either stores. 

On Tuesday, at about 6 p.m., a man and a woman went into the Corner Closet and displayed a handgun. They forced a woman to the back of the store, into a storage area, where her legs and hands were tied up. The robbers than went back to the front of the store where they stole designer handbags, scarves and other accessories. Police believe the two fled in a late 1990s or early 2000s four-door white domestic sedan.

The victim was able to get free from restraints and exited the store, at which time the employee asked someone to call 911. 

On Wednesday night, Suffolk County Crime Stoppers released a sketch of the male robber and notice of a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest. Tips have already began to come, and Proctor said investigators are following up leads. 

Police do not have a sketch of the female robber because the victim did not get a good look at her face, which was partially covered by a hooded sweatshirt. 

Police described the man as Hispanic, approximately 5 feet 3 inches tall with brown hair and in his late 20s to early 30s. He was wearing a black sweatshirt and jeans. The woman was described as Hispanic, approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall with brown hair and in her late 20s to early 30s. She was wearing a fuchsia sweater vest over a black hooded sweatshirt and jeans.
