Cops Investigating Alleged Arson at Shinnecock Smoke Shop

The New York State troopers are investigating an arson at the Shinnecock Smoke Shop on Thursday, the second arson investigation launched on the Southampton reservation in the past two months.

Southampton Town Fire Marshal Chris Hansen confirmed the investigation, but said the state police are taking the lead. The town fire marshal's office was involved in determining the cause of the origin, but Hansen declined to comment on the results.

The shop was boarded up and police tape was up at the Montauk Highway smoke shop. Troopers and detectives were still on scene Thursday afternoon.

The fire took place "sometime last evening," Hansen said.

The Southampton Fire Department was not notified and did not respond, according to fire officials.

New York State police were not immediately available for comment on Thursday afternoon.

On Oct. 30, a large office trailer near the community center on the reservation was destroyed by a fire that fire marshals are still investigating as an arson. The trailer was used by the gaming authority.

Hansen said Thursday that he is still waiting results from the lab regarding that fire.

The FBI and New York State Bureau of Criminal Justice is also investigating . At the time, Hansen said the fire marshal's office did not call the FBI in, but that they were involved due to a prior incident.
