Update 5:55 p.m. - Montauk Highway re-opened in both directions at 5:31 p.m. after the accident scene was cleared.
A car accident on Monday afternoon on Montauk Highway, near the Southampton Fire Department substation at St. Andrews Road, has police diverting traffic, as the extent of any injuries remained unclear.
Police confirmed that at 4:43 p.m., a call was received reporting a motor vehicle accident near the Shinnecock reservation. As of 5:25 p.m., police were directing traffic westbound on Montauk Highway, north up Tuckahoe Lane to County Road 39.
A prior accident nearby, on Ridge Road, also caused traffic delays, according to Southampton Police Sgt. John Boden. Boden said the earlier crash caused minor injuries, though was unsure about the Montuak Highway crash.
