Brush Fire Comes Close to Homes in Shinnecock Hills

Cause of fire undetermined.

A brush fire broke out Saturday that sent a plume of smoke over Shinnecock Hills and threatened houses, but Southampton Fire Department extinguished the blaze before any residences were damaged.

Second Assistant Chief Chris Brenner said smoke was reported in Shinnecock Hills west of the Stony Brook Southampton campus at 5:20 p.m. "As units were responding, they could see heavy smoke billowing up from the woods," he said. "First Assistant Chief Mike Kampf had it re-toned out as a brush fire."

The fire was located off Blackwatch Court, where it was coming "dangerously close" to two residences, Brenner said.

About 30 firefighters responded, with two brush trucks, a pumper truck and two tankers, according to Brenner, who said they were on scene for an hour.

Southampton Town fire marshals are investigating the cause.
