Bay Constables Rescue Surfer off Shinnecock Inlet Jetty

The Southampton Town Bay Constables rescued a surfer in danger of washing up onto the rocks of the jetty east of the Shinnecock Inlet.

On Sunday, June 1, at about 3:43 p.m. a fisherman observed a surfer in the water very close to the jetty. The fisherman called out to a boat in the inlet, which broadcast a distress call.

Bay Constable Al Tuzzolo responded and arrived on the scene within minutes, and was able to maneuver the patrol boat close enough to the surfer to bring him safely on board.

The surfer, a 15-year-old boy from Hampton Bays, was taken back to the dock at Oaklands Marina, where he--and his board--was picked up by his parent.

The surfer stated he had been surfing on the east side of the inlet, off the county park, when breaking surf pushed him too close to the jetty. He said he had not been able to paddle away from the jetty to open water or the beach.

The surfer was uninjured and refused medical treatment at the scene.
