After Bullet Shot Into Bedroom, Teen Charged

Police say 18-year-old was shooting at rats.

While investigating gunshots reported on Henry Street, Southampton Village police discovered a .22 caliber round on a bed, which they say entered the home from outside.

The call came at 2:35 p.m. on Feb. 9.  Police said they determined that a stray bullet hit the house while an 18-year-old was shooting at rats.

"He was trying to exterminate some of the rodents," Det. Sgt. Herman Lamison said.

A .22 caliber rifle and ammunition were recovered, and the teenager was charged with reckless endangerment in the second degree and discharging a gun within 500 feet of a dwelling, both misdemeanors. Lamison said the rifle belonged to a relative of the teen.

Lamison said the teen's name is being withheld because he is eligible for youthful offender status.
