Private Beach Front Home Sand Replenishment

Beach front home owners benefit with resource diverted from the greater good.

A walk along the beach at Flying Point today, Sunday, November 4th in an easterly direction to Mecox Inlet, revealed a large beach erosion project.  Massive trucks and payloaders were moving sand to what appears to be a private beach front home.

Along other stretches of the beach in Bridgehampton we saw sand berms recently recreated to protect at least one public beach and a washover caused by Sandy.

Kudos to the Trustees for taking care of our public beaches and access points, but why private homes?

In previous operations I was informed that homeowners were charged for "our" sand.  In this case I wonder whether the charge, if there is one, is sufficient to cover the loss of sand taken from Mecox Inlet, which is now denuded and flat.

The sand being put in front of people's houses wasn't given to them. They're paying plenty for it. It is excess storm sand that had been sold by the Trustees to local businesses who dig it, then truck it to homeowners who pay for it - handsomely, no doubt. The Trustees have someone from their office parked down there monitoring what is taken.
The storm, like many before it, washed tons of sand along the ocean beach and swept it into Mecox Bay. It also flattened Mecox beach as its waves washed over it, and opened a wide inlet. If you look carefully, you can see all that extra new sand from the ocean has created massive sand flats extending deep into to the bay. The area between Jobs Lane and Flying Point Road belongs to the Trustees who manage it for the people of the town. For years they have been selling some of the sand from the growing sand flats as a way of getting revenue, both to save the taxpayer money and to remove some of the sand clogging the bay. They have been using the money they make to pay for needed projects and to make up for all the money the Supervisor has been taking out of their budget. Funny, she's been gutting budgets and services in departments all over town hall just to make money available to give to an oceanfront association to get a government grant to buy sand to put in front of their houses. Kind of ironic?

It would be helpful to know precisely the price of the sand per cubic yard(I am told the price is $7 per cubic yard). And if the local businesses buy it, as you state, what do they charge the home owners. It there a mark up? If so should not the Town capture the mark-up?
I was under the impression that the homeowners paid for the sand directly to/from the Town. Clarify, please>

I hope you can go observe the property before the forecast storm for this Wednesday and after the storm. Will the sand still be in place.
More importantly what will the affect of this artificial barrier in front of one home be on the property owners to the west?

Everyone has their fingers in the Town's honey pot, it seems. Local contractors, builders, developers...all linked by "donation" to local political parties. It's a "tradition" that goes back to many Town Supervisors. It's disgusting and one of the reasons a friend of mine said that Southampton Town Hall is more corrupt than Brookhaven.

Maud, Thanks for the info. I looked it up online. Very scary stuff. The Town of Southampton isRead More playing with fire with plans for Sustainability. Just another word for Agenda 21. What fools would want to go along with this scam? Guess they want to rule our lives just like the U.N. wants to do with our property rights, food, and fuel.
