Tim Bishop Talks Abortion Rights, Federal Spending [VIDEO]

U.S. Rep. Tim Bishop, D-Southampton, is the latest guest on the Rev. Dr. Katrina Foster's show "The Hamptons Lutheran Parish."

U.S. Rep. Tim Bishop, of Southampton — who is currently in an election battle with  St. James businessman Randy Altschuler — discussed current issues in the political scene in the latest episode of "The Hamptons Lutheran Parish."

Host the Rev. Dr. Katrina Foster, the pastor of Incarnation Lutheran Church in Water Mill and in Amagansett, asked Bishop about recent reports regarding a campaign contribution from a constituent.

Bishop denied that he inappropriately sought a contribution after the constituent asked for his assistance.

"It's really very simple," Bishop said. "A constituent asked me to help him get permits for a fireworks display because the fireworks company had not filed for the permits on a timely basis.

"Bringing various agencies of government together to get to the right answer is something that we do all the time. We were able to get it done, and that was it."

Bishop noted that the constituent in question, Eric Semler, denied in the original Politico report that he committed any wrong-doing.

Semler gave Bishop's campaign $5,000, but Bishop donated the money to veterans' organizations after the controversy arose, "out of an abundance of caution," his campaign said at the time.

"We are in unfortunately, the political season where charges fly and whether or not they are substantiated generally isn't as important as making the charge," Bishop told Foster.

Foster and Bishop also discussed the current debate over abortion.

"The notion that a women would have to carry the child of her rapist or have to carry the child that results from incest is extreme, and, as I say, I think it's cruel," Bishop said. "Choice is a legitimate issue on which reasonable people can disagree. My own view is that I am pro-choice but I share the formulation that President Clinton used, which is that abortion should be safe, legal and rare, and the emphasis on rare."

Other topics included tax credits, tax rates, and the national budget deficit.

Bishop said everything must be on the table when it comes to cutting the deficit, including defense and revenue, and there can be "no sacred cows" that are exempt from discussion.

"For people to talk about this process as if it's painless, as if it can be done as some sort of magical application of a formula is misleading the American people, and they deserve better," he said.

Altschuler has been invited to appear on the show at a future date,  Foster said.

Sad. The friendly places Tim can go have shrunk to a small room with a half-baked so called woman of the cloth. Not very ethical to lie during a public confession either.

St. Michael's Lutheran Church used to be a great little place, oh well. As for Bishop talking abortion. Again, Roe vs. Wade is the controlling law of the land and abortion is LEGAL, with very few exceptions made SCOTUS. A state's own law (voted into) must pass constitutional muster. Every state law is challenged (because of so many groups whose sole mission is to sue and challange everything - which is fine). But they challenge the state law and the Federal Courts rule on the constutitionality of it. To keep alleging that there is a war on women and that the right to abort will be taken away is not true. It is legal and always will be. I believe a woman has the right to choose - period. He can attack Repubs all day long - but Bishop is a total fool. He has been proven to be a hack liar and a cheat and a bankrupter of our college, while hiring his 23 family members at high pay.
Stinker September 09, 2012 at 11:18 AM
Bishop didn't get involved in some issue up the island and lost the endorsement of some large union didn't he? He had claimed it was out of his purview, not in his job description, wasn't his problem. But he's ok to throw around issues about which he has no control in an effort to garner votes. Trust me, I have heard him say this many, many times in many different ways - he does not think the readers of the Patch or his constituents are very smart or resourceful.

Stinker...you are a jackass. I heard the school bell ring...go back to class little boy.

It's foolish to state that the Supremes have ruled on abortion and that's that. What the Supremes have done, they can undo. Voting in legislators who are anti-abortion will result in the nomination of NEW Supremes who are anti-abortion, and the overruling of Roe v. Wade. Randy Altschuler is anti-abortion; Tim Bishop is pro-abortion. There's a real choice here.
Hazel Wilkonson the First September 09, 2012 at 06:06 PM
highhat, Time is not "PRO-abortion" he is "pro-CHOICE" any important distinction. Speaking of this issue, just today Altschulers presidential nominee doppelganger Romney confirmed that he would like to overturn Roe V. Wade.
highhatsize September 09, 2012 at 06:21 PM
to Hazel Wilkonson the First: I used the word "abortion" advisedly as I think that both sides use inappropriate euphemisms. "Choice" and "Life" are not irrelevant but what we are talking about is that unpleasant procedure known as "abortion."
Hazel Wilkonson the First September 09, 2012 at 06:27 PM
No, it is a "choice" - a woman's 'choice" No woman I know is pro-abortion, they are fighting for a choice to control their own bodies, but they are not advocating abortion.
Factual September 09, 2012 at 08:18 PM
So true stinker. A congressman has no impact on this issue. If you argue the composition of the Supreme Court has a potential future effect then fine. The President nominates Supreme Court Justices and the Senate consents - Tim Bishop, congressman, has no impact. It is about as relevant as asking the nominee for town tax receiver their position on abortion. It is a cheap play for votes by Bishop - and to have a person of the cloth provide the forum to play politics with such a religiously divisive issue is confusing. Bottom line is Bishop has been shown by Politico to be unethical. He has been charged as being an alleged liar on this website by people who know him (and used their real names to make the allegations). And his record shows him to be a truly ineffective legislator in every measurable way. As the son of a single mom, to even ask Altschuler's opinion on this issue is cruel and unfeeling.
highhatsize September 09, 2012 at 08:52 PM
to Factual: Your statement that "Bishop has been shown by Politico to be unethical" is false. Your further statement that "[H]e has been charged as being an alleged liar" is insubstantial on its face. Your allegation that he has been ineffective as a legislator has been refuted repeatedly on this forum. Finally, a candidate's position on abortion and his reasons for that position are revelatory of his character. If YOU don't want to know a candidate's position on abortion, vote for the one who doesn't state one. It's important to me and to other voters to know that Randy Altschuler is anti-abortion.
TerenceQuinn September 09, 2012 at 11:37 PM
Hazel - if you are the ability of women to control their bodies, I'm sure you are in favor of legalizing prostitution, which will allow women to control their bodies also. This is now a criminal activity now and is not the killing of an unborn fetus.
Preliator September 10, 2012 at 12:52 AM
Not to pick a fight but wasn't there a poll recently that found 50% of Americans identified themselves as pro-life. Just asking.
Jaguar-Guy September 10, 2012 at 11:36 AM
Hi Hazel dear - can you provide that link please. Thank you.
Jaguar-Guy September 10, 2012 at 11:40 AM
Oh, thank you hhs for clarifying that PATCH (as fine as it is) is the final arbitor of Ethics charges against Tim "extort my money and send it overseas" Bishop. No Sir, PATCH is a local opinion social network site. There's no judge, jury and executioner for Tim here, but that's ok, the voters will speak loud and clear and vote him out. He bankrupted our College, hired dozens of family members, sent his daughter over $500,000 in campaign money and extorted donations from the Semler's. He is a fraud and a liar and is g-o-n-e.
Lady L September 10, 2012 at 12:47 PM
Hazel, still waiting for that link. With abortion, we are killing our future. We are below replacement already, as many countries are. Overtaxation has caused many to leave the home and children so they can get ahead. It used to be that children were seen as a blessing, how sad we flush the pre-born down the toilet.
Hazel Wilkonson the First September 10, 2012 at 12:59 PM
Hey, Jag and Lady L., you guys think I wait around for you to ask for something, especially when you could have googled it yourself. At any rate, here it is kids, enjoy http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/romney-its-my-preference-that-supreme-court-reverse

I have to say I support Tim Bishop when it comes to being pro-abortion/pro-choice. The simple fact that liberal/progressive/Democrat minded people are far more inclined to practice Infanticide on their own is perfectly fine with me; the fewer future liberals there are the better. Better yet, let's help out the Sandra Flukes of the world, how about free hysterectomies and they'll never ever have to worry about being punished with a baby. They can have all the sex they want; no pills, no worries and no problems. All we have to do is keep them away from our kids so they can not infect them with their disease: liberalism.
Jaguar-Guy September 10, 2012 at 01:52 PM
He cannot overturn SCOTUS. He was pro-choice when Gov. of MA. He says he does not want the federal government to not pay for abortions - not overturn Roe vs. Wade. States make those laws dear. p.s. I agree with you about hhs getting that wrong too. Be well.
Jaguar-Guy September 10, 2012 at 01:53 PM
Go Hazel, school that Dufus. Who is Pro-Abortion ?? I am Pro-Choice.
christie nicolle September 10, 2012 at 10:01 PM
As pro-choice conservative gal, i see no change in Roe v. Wade coming ever... so you liberals who keep voting democrat out of fear...DON"T! W. Bush didn't stop abortion rights + neither will Mitt. Frankly, its immoral when any woman gets pregnant unintentionally...it's still a serious matter! Go Women For Mitt!!
Carole Campolo September 10, 2012 at 11:55 PM
This video is offensive on so many levels I don't know where to begin. Extreme is at the mother's choice putting a pair of scissors into the neck of an infant as it struggles to take its first breath and be born. That is what you pro choicers call partial birth abortion. Extreme is when an abortion is not successful, the child is born alive and no medical care is to be administered to save that baby. That is the extreme position of Obama and his HHS Secretary, Sebelius. For the Reverend Katrina not to ask Bishop to address these positions of his party, in my view shows she is not a serious interviewer and has an agenda on the abortion. Moreover, I was stunned that as a Reverend she did not ask Bishop to comment on his party's anti-God and anti-Jerusalem platform. I would have thought that would have been her first question. But, this is just not a serious show.

You know the only time Barack Obama stood up to fight for something as a state rep it was a law to forbid doctor's from helping any child that survived a late term abortion. Yes, the brave Obama is perfectly fine with taking a child ripped from its mother's womb that some how survives and leaving it to die in a sink in a broom closet. Some asked about character on another board, that should just about sum up what kind of man Barack Obama is.

This came from a lifelong Bishop friend (Mr. Wilson) who worked at the college in response to a different article: "Now Bishop claims that he donated the pay-off to Veteran Organization. I have known Tim Bishop for a long time and my answer is I would like to see the three checks made out and cashed by the organization he claims he has donated to." It looks like he is charging/accusing Bishop of lying. His ineffectiveness as a legislator and congressman has been attested to on this website by about 5 to 1 over the last three months - go count. And as I said - someone raised by a single mother certainly has every right to be pro life and not pro abortion. Any feeling person can understand why the son of a single mom would be pro life. So let people judge Altschuler for not being in favor of abortions.

hatassize is for forth trimester abortions. Obama is for 90th trimester abortions and Bishop is for whatever the party line is.
