Renaming the Roslyn Viaduct for William Cullen Bryant

Assemblywoman Schimel sponsors bill to rename overpass for Long Island poet.

The New York State Assembly recently passed legislation (A.5333a/S.6240) I sponsored designating the newly reconstructed Roslyn Viaduct in honor of William Cullen Bryant, an American literary figure and one of Roslyn’s most famous residents. The measure, which is sponsored in the State Senate by , has been passed by both houses of the State Legislature and now awaits approval by the governor.

When the Friends of Cedarmere asked me to consider introducing legislation renaming the major overpass as the “William Cullen Bryant Viaduct,” I immediately heeded their request. As the former North Hempstead Town Clerk, I was well aware of Bryant’s historic contributions and how important preserving his legacy is to the Roslyn community.

As a community we must never forget our historical roots and those who came before us. Bryant’s tie to Roslyn, a community that prides itself on preserving its history and heritage, makes it very fitting to rename the area’s major roadway after one of its most celebrated residents.

A prominent nineteenth century poet, newspaper editor, and civic leader, William Cullen Bryant purchased Cedarmere in 1843 and he resided at the Roslyn Harbor estate until his death in 1878. Bryant’s relatives left his estate to Nassau County for the purpose of preserving it as a memorial to Bryant.

Michelle Schimel is the New York State Assembly representative for the 16th Assembly District. She was first elected in a Special Election held on March 27, 2007.

And I would like to name a yeast infection after Schimel. How about doing some Real Work instead of spending our taxpayer dollars on new street signs? And you can censor the truth all you like, I'll just keep reposting and opening up new accounts. Fascist dictatorial censors.
